A Care Quality Commission report published yesterday (23 May 2018) has recognised significant improvements in the extended and out of hours GP Service which covers Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland.

The report, which follows an inspection of South Tees Access Response (STAR) in January 2018, rates the service as “Requires Improvement” overall and “Good” for providing caring services.

Inspectors noted significant improvements to quality of care compared to the service’s previous inspection in July 2017 and confirmed it was no longer under special measures.

The report, published on the CQC website, rates the STAR Service as follows:

  • Overall rating for this service – Requires Improvement
  • Are services safe? – Requires Improvement
  • Are services effective? – Requires Improvement
  • Are services caring? – Good
  • Are services responsive to people’s needs? – Requires Improvement
  • Are services well-led? – Requires Improvement

The report features positive patient feedback and praises staff for treating people with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. It also highlights areas the service must continue to improve including staffing and governance.

Mandy Headland, Director of Operations for ELM Alliance Ltd which runs the STAR Service said: “Our staff have worked really hard over the past few months to implement a number of changes and we would like to thank them for their dedication and support.

“We welcome the findings of the report, but we know there is still a lot of work to be done as we continue to develop this new service which ensures patients registered in Middlesbrough, Redcar and East Cleveland have GP access 24/7.

“Patient safety and quality care remain our highest priorities and we are working closely with South Tees Clinical Commissioning Group to implement all of the recommendations from the CQC, many of which are already in place.”

Patients can request extended hours appointments via their own GP surgery, online via their GP surgery’s website or by calling NHS 111 out of hours.
